11. Assault on the USS Liberty Jim Condit Jr.: Israel is NOT America's ally. Commander Jim Ennes, author of "Assault on the Liberty", was Officer of the Deck onboard the USS LIBERTY when Israel attacked in June, 1967. Commander Ennes: Commander Jim Ennes: There is no doubt Israel deliberately attacked USS Liberty. They circled our ship at close range. Their pilots reported to headquarters during the attack that we were American. Israeli torpedo boats fired five torpedoes . . . hitting us with one. Torpedo boats then came within fifty feet, examined our flag and markings, and commenced machine-gunning our life rafts in the water, continuing to fire from close range for another forty minutes. Before it was over, Israel had killed 34 American sailors and wounded 172 more.
